How to Ship a Car from Canada to Jamaica (Kingston) — 2026 Guide
Real costs from Montreal to Port of Kingston, Jamaica's import licence requirement from the Trade Board, the Returning Resident status that lets diaspora ship 10-year-old cars, and the duty + GCT + environmental levy stack you'll face at clearance.
What you'll pay
Returning Resident vs Standard Import
Jamaica has a special Returning Resident status for Jamaicans who have lived abroad ≥3 years and are now relocating back. Once status is granted by Jamaica Customs, the resident can import vehicles up to 10 model years old (vs the typical 5-year standard limit), provided they've owned the vehicle for at least 6 months.
Note: even with Returning Resident status, there is no duty exemption — taxes are charged at full rates. The benefit is purely the relaxed age limit.
To qualify, your consignee must apply for the status BEFORE the vehicle arrives. We can connect you with Jamaican customs brokers who handle the application.
Jamaica duty structure
- Import Duty: 10–40% depending on engine size and vehicle type
- Special Consumption Tax (SCT): applied to vehicles based on engine displacement
- General Consumption Tax (GCT): 15% on (CIF + duty + SCT)
- Environmental Levy: 0.5% of CIF
- Customs Administration Fee (CAF): a fixed JMD charge
Effective rate on a typical mid-size sedan: ~50% of CIF combined. On larger engines or luxury vehicles it can reach 80%+.
Required paperwork
Canada side: vehicle title, bill of sale, CBSA B13A export declaration, government ID, photos.
Jamaica side:
- Trade Board Import Licence (apply before arrival at https://www.tradeboard.gov.jm)
- Original Bill of Lading
- Original commercial invoice
- Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) from TAJ
- Tax Registration Number (TRN)
- For Returning Resident: proof of overseas residence + 6-month vehicle ownership
4 common mistakes
1. No Import Licence before vessel arrival
The Trade Board licence must be in hand BEFORE the cargo arrives at Kingston. Apply at least 4 weeks ahead. Without it, the vehicle is stranded at port with storage fees.
2. Misunderstanding Returning Resident benefits
Returning Resident status gets you more lenient age limits, NOT duty exemption. Plenty of first-time importers think their move qualifies them for tax-free import. It doesn't.
3. Ignoring engine-size impact
Jamaica's SCT (Special Consumption Tax) jumps significantly at certain engine displacements. A 1.8L sedan and a 2.5L sedan can have very different landed costs. Verify the SCT bracket before committing.
4. Not having TCC + TRN ready
Both are required to clear cargo. Your consignee must register with TAJ (Tax Administration Jamaica) before vessel arrival. Both are free, but take 1-2 weeks to issue.
